Did You Catch The Flash's 'Batman V Superman' Parallel In 'DC Rebirth: #1'?

Most DC fans, not to mention everybody else tricked into seeing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice back in March, probably stopped trying to make sense of Zack Snyder's narratively dense, plot hole-ridden but highly-entertaining superhero epic quite some time ago. Recently, though, one particular sequence from the movie has found a surprising parallel within a panel in DC Universe: Rebirth #1.
Among the many things that made subzero sense in Dawn of Justice (at least without the additional context that the Ultimate Cut might bring when it arrives on Blu-ray this summer) was a brief whirlwind of a scene in which the Flash turns up out of nowhere to yell some seriously cryptic stuff at Bruce Wayne, who had the good decency to look just as mystified as the audience.
Trapped in what looks like the timestream (but which could conceivably also be a Speed Cannon), Barry Allen tells Bruce that "you were right about him," which could be an allusion to Superman, but doesn't actually make total sense considering that the Flash has come from the future (in this dimension or another), and ultimately Superman (in this reality) proves that Bruce was wrong about him.
He also makes passing reference to Lois Lane ("It's Lois! She's the key!"), which again doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and then he disappears and we're left wondering what, if anything, can be taken as an omen of something to come in the DCEU.
DC Universe: Rebirth #1 (written by Geoff Johns) features a panel with some unexpected parallels, and while it may just be coincidence and most definitely doesn't clear up anything about that sequence in Dawn of Justice, it's nonetheless pretty interesting to see something quite similar make the unusual jump from screen to page.
The scene in question comes early in the one-shot, when Wally West's Flash pays the first of his visits to various heroes in the DC Universe, all of whom, he quickly discovers, have had 10 years of memories stolen from them by a mysterious entity with the ability to distort the very fabric of the universe (for more in-depth discussion on that, click here).
As Batman mulls over the long-held secret shared with him by the Mobius Chair, which revealed that not one, but three Jokers exist or have existed in Gotham City, The Flash pops up in the Batcave, only to discover that, despite their interactions in the New 52, Bruce has no idea who Wally West actually is.
Ultimately, a rip into time sucks Wally back into the Speed Force, his conversation with Bruce cut short before either party can make sense of what happened -- which is exactly how it goes down in Batman v Superman, only with Barry as the designated speedster.
That, and the mysterious circumstances of the visit, might be where the similarities end, but it's still a pretty neat novelty to see two scenes with such obvious parallels. It must be said, though, that Gary Frank's tremendous artwork really elevates this panel into something much more visually arresting than its movie counterpart.

Post 'Rebirth', 'Green Arrow' Issue 1 Sets Oliver Queen Up For A Fall From Grace

After a fantastic Rebirth introduction to Green Arrow's new solo series, Issue 1 dives headfirst into the action as Ollie and Dinah team up again to track down the Underground Men. There's a lot going on in this issue, what with the introduction of Emika Queen (Ollie's half sister), and the web of conspiracy connecting Queen Industries to human traffiking. But the story doesn't feel crowded — the dialogue sizzles, the plot is taken at a good pace, and the art is glorious.
There's some really interesting moral questions posed by Issue 1, which is fitting for bleeding heart liberal Oliver Queen.

Oliver Queen was always an SJW.
As desperate as he is to convince Dinah of his good deeds, Ollie discovers corruption at the heart of his own company.

Cultural Commentary

This is an interesting commentary on corporate culture, which is a hot topic right now. Writer Benjamin Percy already revealed to Newsarama that this new comic series will be tackling a lot of current social politics, just as the old Green Arrow comics did back in the Silver Age.
"We're channeling the zeitgeist. If you've been reading the newspapers over the past few months, you've encountered headlines that we have considered filtering into — slanted versions of — into the series."

Oliver investigates his own company.
But as much as Oliver wants to believe in his own philanthropy, and fight the corruption within Queen Industries, he's still engaging in his own, benevolent kind of corruption — bribing cops for "good behavior" and claiming this is his way to combat high arrest rates and police brutality.
It all goes back to Black Canary's criticism of Green Arrow's hypocrisy last issue, pointing out that it's difficult for him to fight the Man if he is the Man. It looks like Oliver's about to learn a harsh lesson about the shady world of corporate capitalism, as his company seems to be controlling the Underground Men themselves.

Same, Dinah, same.
Interestingly enough, this is setting up a crucial moment in Oliver's history, echoing the Silver Age comics in a really neat way.

Losing A Fortune, Finding A Purpose

Back in the late 1960s, DC felt they needed to give Oliver Queen a bit of a shock, so he lost his fortune after his former partner committed a spot of corporate fraud. This sent Oliver spinning into a full blown identity crisis, which naturally resulted in his inner self literally leaving his body in because hey, this was the Sixties.

Oliver goes to therapy, literally splits identities
We already seen the beginnings of this Oliver's identity crisis last issue, as he commented on how he feels removed from his billionaire persona. That was causing him existential angst before he knew that his company was committing some pretty huge crimes, and it seems certain that Ollie's primed to spiral down a dark path after Issue 1. This is something Percy commented on to Newsarama:
"Green Arrow has lost his fortune before, but this will be the first time that he's complicit in that loss."
The parallels between this story and what's come before are palpable, and it's nice to know that Percy's hitting all the essential parts of Oliver Queen's character development.

Dinah leaves Ollie to conduct her own investigation
Back in the Silver Age, the loss of his fortune caused Oliver to become more reflective about how he fought crime, getting more in touch with the people. It's nice to see this mirrored in the new series, but there might be dark consequences down the road — in the Silver Age, Ollie accidentally ended up killing a criminal in the aftermath of losing his riches.
Of course, Oliver's got plenty of other things to worry about to. There's the fact that his half sister Emiko has teamed up with her mother Shado to assassinate Ollie. Emi was a misguided but ultimately good hearted figure before Rebirth, so we have to hope that she's not beyond redemption. How's Oliver going to get out of this one? And how are the Underground Men planning on painting him as a despot? There's a lot of exciting threads set up in Issue 1, and we can't wait to see how it all plays out.

Who do you think the man behind the mask is?

Why These Marvel Characters Should Make Their Big Screen Debut's!

With the success of the Marvel/Netflix relationship and the way the movies are performing on the big screen, there should be a huge expansion of characters coming in the near future. There are so many characters yet untouched, that offer unique story-lines and diversity for the next class of superhero/villain debuts, that it's exciting.
I have picked a small group of characters that can really take off on Netflix or the big screen. Each of these characters has something about them that can really bring new audiences in and enhance an already great cinematic universe. Whether it's Marvel, Sony, Fox, or Netflix- we can all agree that fans will love to see the live action versions of these characters done right.

Alpha Flight

The Canadian supergroup has always had a firm corner all to themselves in the Marvel universe, and with good reason. Guardian, Northstar, Aurora, Puck, Sasquatch, Vindicator, Shaman, and Snowbird are some of the coolest characters never to hit the mainstream of Marvel heroes.
Northstar has been the most popular as he is the first superhero to come out as Gay. He's been featured in X-books as a major character in some of the biggest story-lines. Wolverine also has a past with Alpha Flight and it would be nice to see this team be given a live action movie or Netflix show because their stories deserve to be told.

Simon Williams-Wonder Man

Simon Williams WONDER MAN is definitely one character that fans can't wait to see in the MCU. He was a creation of Baron Zemo, and since we have already seen him in Civil War, we should be treated to this wonderful character onscreen, and maybe we'll see him in the near future. Nathan Fillion (Castle) is reported to play Wonder Man on the next Guardians of the Galaxy in a cameo. Maybe we can see Wonder Man play a more crucial role in Avengers: Infinity War?

Morbius-The Living Vampire

Michael Morbius was a biochemist that had a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself of the infliction with vampire bats. What occurred after was the creation of a new breed of bloodsucker. Originally a Spider-Man villain, he has been featured in Ghost Rider, Blade, and Doctor Strange stories and since all those characters are on the live screen, or on their war then we should hope to see Morbius soon.
Check out this cool fan made film!

KA-ZAR and Shanna The She-Devil

Marvel's answer to Tarzan and Jane, these two characters are definitely unique in this universe. They are both inhabitants of the fabled SAVAGE LAND, a hidden prehistoric jungle filled with Dinosaurs under Antarctica that became a big part of the X-Men universe. They have the gifts of being able to communicate with the animals, and of course are in peak physical shape. Now that the XCU has rebooted, and we're going in the direction of the great stories of the 1980s, these characters would be great to add in a Savage Land movie. There is a possibility that we may see Kazar and Shanna in a Spider-Man movie one day.

Has LEGO Revealed The Main Villain Of 'Doctor Strange'?

Before you mock, bear with me. LEGO playsets have a history of revealing major scenes - as an example, LEGO kind of blew the lid on the Giant-Man transformation in Captain America: Civil War. But now LEGO may have gone even further, revealing none other than the main villain for Doctor Strange.
The Sanctum Sanctorum invaded!
The Sanctum Sanctorum invaded!
If the playset is actually based on a moment in the film (they usually are), then it clearly depicts the Sanctum Sanctorum - Doctor Strange's New York residence. Given Doctor Strange has to head to the Ancient One and be trained by him before moving into the Sanctum Sanctorum, this scene would logically be later on in the film.
What's more, there are clearly three characters in this scene - Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wong (Benedict Wong), and Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). So all three characters must have been introduced at this point.
But what are they fighting? Well, unless I miss my guess, it's Shuma-Gorath.

WAIT, JUST WHAT IS A SHUMA-GORATH..?

Yeah, Doctor Strange has trippy villains.
Yeah, Doctor Strange has trippy villains.
An ancient force of chaos, Shuma-Gorath is one of Doctor Strange's deadliest enemies. It's an extra-dimensional entity of tremendous power, and actually ruled Earth in prehistoric times, demanding human sacrifice to sate its appetite. The creature was eventually banished, but has constantly attempted to return.
Shuma-Gorath's presence suggests a few details that are perhaps surprising. In the comics, Doctor Strange was trained by the Ancient One, and then headed back to New York. He was involved in a series of adventures - most notably, battling the dread Dormammu - beforecoming into contact with Shuma-Gorath. We'd previously been expecting Dormammu to be the main villain, not least because of Kevin Feige'sthrowaway comment about seeing the "Dark Dimension".
This theory would leave Dormammu for sequels.
This theory would leave Dormammu for sequels.
Shuma-Gorath's presence teases a different direction for the plot. Shuma-Gorath actually possessed the Ancient One's body, and through the Ancient One launched an attempt to take our entire reality. Doctor Strange was left no choice but to kill the Ancient One, and in defending the world from Shuma-Gorath earned the title 'Sorcerer Supreme'.
It's entirely possible that Doctor Strange will follow this plot, and we'll see Stephen Strange become Sorcerer Supreme in his cinematic début (I'd expected that to happen in the sequel, personally).

SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MADS MIKKELSEN?

Just who is Mads Mikkelsen playing..?
Just who is Mads Mikkelsen playing..?
We know that Mads Mikkelsen is playing a creepy-looking villain inDoctor Strange, and Marvel has kept his identity secret. Is it possible thatDoctor Strange will tweak the concept of Shuma-Gorath, by having the creature possessing one of Strange's fellow sorcerers and summoning creatures like the ones seen in the LEGO playset? If so, it's also possible that Shuma-Gorath will only possess the Ancient One when Mads Mikkelsen's character is killed.
That seems a fair guess, but at the same time it doesn't add up. If Mikkelsen were playing a possessed sorcerer, then I'd expect Marvel just to release the name of the sorcerer - and thus leave the Shuma-Gorath detail as a surprise.
And what of the Dark Dimension? That may actually be a smart move - as part of Doctor Strange's training, have him dabble with the Dark Dimension (Feige only mentioned "glimpses" of the Dark Dimension, after all). But set up the lord of the Dark Dimension as a recurring villain, and maybe even link to Baron Mordo as another recurring villain?
Dormammu should be BIG NEWS.
Dormammu should be BIG NEWS.
All in all, it looks pretty certain that Shuma-Gorath plays a major role inDoctor Strange. But, for all this LEGO playset reveals that, in doing so it raises a lot more questions. We may well know a lot more about Marvel's mystery villain, but by no means do we know everything!

Are you excited to see Shuma-Gorath? Let me know in the comments!

Italian mayor says he's putting his town up for sale

An Italian mayor has asked on social media for a "wealthy Chinese investor" to buy his cash-strapped town.
Francesco Garofalo has been the mayor of the rural town of San Sossio Baronia in southern Italy for seven years, in a region more known for its centuries-old production of hazelnuts than its foreign investment.
Garofalo posted the unusual plea for help on Facebook, explaining that the town was facing a "perennial lack of money" due to tough economic times:

He clarified his comments on an Italian website insisting that the town was a good investment given its "strong tourism potential".
He also joked that the price tag was lower than the value of Italian football clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan, that have both caught the eye of Chinese investors in recent months.

Mixed response

The mayor's comments have prompted some reaction on social media.
Facebook user, Carmelo Contardo, posted: "Don't speak too loudly - or the Chinese will arrive sooner".
Mario de Guglielmo posted: "Be careful, dear mayor because the proposal is tempting, especially these days. [Selling the town to the Chinese] could be a solution, since the political class at government level has abandoned us, especially the small communities."

Raising awareness

Garofalo wrote back saying that "negotiations" were underway, but that any deal would hinge on getting the right price for the town.
He went on to say: "I asked for 400 million Euros (around a million Euros per household in the town), but so far I've only been offered 250 million Euros."
The mayor admitted in a later Facebook post that his comments were in fact a provocation aimed at raising awareness of the economic issues the town of faces.
He is hoping to use his time in the limelight to organise a football friendly between San Sossio Baronia and the Chinese-owned Inter Milan.
