As far as horror villains go, it's the role of a lifetime, playing fear personified in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's It. The book follows a group of children who face off against a creature that takes the shape of their biggest fears — often a clown named Pennywise — and then who encounter him again as adults. And now the New Line film, directed by Andrés Muschietti, has found a face to paint white and put a red nose on: Bill Skarsgård.
Despite recent rumors of actors being considered for the role (Kirk Acevedo for one), The Hollywood Reporter confirms Skarsgård is the one wrapping up negotiations for the role. Will Poulter was most recently attached to play the clown when Cary Fukunaga was in the director's chair, but his exit made Poulter's schedule no longer work for filming.
Pennywise was originally depicted by Tim Curry in the 1990 TV miniseries, but what's interesting to note is that It shows up in many forms in the book, so don't just expect to see Skarsgård as a clown.
One of the stars of Netflix's Hemlock Grove and the latest Divergent filmAllegiant, Skarsgård is also son to actor Stellan Skarsgård and younger brother of Alexander Skarsgård.
It is slated for 2017 and will be made into two parts. Other confirmed cast members include Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor.
