Predator 4, as it is tentatively titled, has been getting a lot of headlines recently. As a bit of a cult 80’s classic that spawned a series of forgettable sequels, side-quels, and spinoffs, I find that quite surprising. I mean, let’s be honest, aside from the original Predator in 1987, the rest of the films involving the titular alien/villain/badass haven’t been great. Predator 2 was decent enough, while Predators, starring Adrien Brody, was entirely forgettable, and that’s to say nothing about the ill thought out Alien vs Predator series (although, I rather enjoyed the first one).
So, why all the love for Predator 4? Well, part of it comes from the fact that the man in charge is Shane Black, now very much a proven director and writer, and one of the original cast, starring as the nerdy Hawkins alongside the rest of the super-butch military men. Another part is the excitement over the thought of the big man himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, reprising his role as Dutch, at least as a cameo. Now that he’s fully back on the Hollywood scene, he’s been signing up to films all over the place, including some of his old franchises such as The Terminator, Conan, and Twins. It’s pretty safe to assume, therefore, that Shane Black will be very keen on getting Arnie on board. And, well, Arnie being Arnie, it probably won’t be a tough sell. It’s well known that he loves the original, so seeing him back as Dutch is looking a distinct possibility.
Now, the latest official news to come from the film is that the release date has been pushed forward by about a month or so. Originally it was meant to drop on March 2, 2018, but now it’s been brought forward to February 9 instead. That means it’ll be coming out over Valentine’s weekend, traditionally quite a popular one for romance movies (obviously), although Deadpool absolutely owned that period this year. Clearly, Fox are pretty confident in the property in giving at that slot, which in itself suggests that things are moving along well behind the scenes.
More exciting, however, is the rumor going around that the current boss of the action genre, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, is in line to join up. He would, of course, take a leading role, possibly as the main protagonist and, well, given that it’s a predator film, most likely leading a group of military types against the monstrous alien. This leads to the extremely exciting prospect of seeing The Rock and Arnie line up together, the biggest action star ever alongside the biggest of his generation. It’s well known that Arnie is one of The Rock’s heroes, so it would be pretty awesome seeing them up on the big screen kicking ass side by side.
Currently, The Rock is pretty much the busiest and hardest working actor in Hollywood. His schedule appears to be pretty much filled up for the foreseeable future, with Baywatch, Fast 8, a sequel to San Andreas, a possible Hobbs spinoff, and the original action picture Skyscraper all in the pipeline. Fitting in Predator 4, therefore, might be a stretch, even for him. Hopefully, they’re working hard to ensure he finds the time. We’re definitely keeping our fingers crossed on that one.
