Those
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in theaters, and despite the
criticism from Ninja Turtles purists, it does look good. For a lot of
people from my generation, Michael Bay has ruined the Ninja Turtles. The
general complaint has been that they don't look right, that Megan Fox
was cast as April O'Neil, and to top it off, the Turtles were
practically aliens. Because of this, a lot of people assumed the movie
series was destined to fail.
Now
I'm about to say something very unpopular. The first movie was amazing —
that is, when the Turtles were on screen. Sure, they looked a little
different than what we're used to seeing, but who cares? They were so
great, as was the action and comedy. This can't be denied.
With the new movie coming out and it getting less than positive reviews from critics
and the internet (Rotten Tomatoes gives it 22 percent and IMDb has it
rated at 6.7 thus far), I am going to give you three really good reasons
why I feel this movie will actually be very entertaining.
1. The Turtles
First
off, does anyone really care about anything else in the movie other
than the Ninja Turtles themselves? They are going to be as good as, if
not better than, they were in the first Michael Bay movie, where their
personalities from the 2000s cartoon were perfectly captured.
Let's break it down.
Leonardo
is the leader and he's a bit of a hard ass. Raphael is the rebellious
tough guy who always jumps into every fight, head-on. Michelangelo is
the free-spirited surfer and skater and the youngest of the brothers.
And lastly, Donatello is the brains. As far as I can tell, that is
exactly what we got in the first movie. Did they look weird with noses?
Sweet Christmas, yes. But did they kick all sorts of butt and make you
laugh? That is also a yes. We will get exactly what you want from them.
2. Stephen Amell As Casey Jones
Seriously, this alone is reason enough to give the movie a fighting chance. Stephen Amell (The CW's Arrow)
admitted he put all that he had into his audition. Since he was so
passionate about the role, it's almost guaranteed that he put his heart
into every scene in the movie. Secondly, for those of you who remember
what a big part of the original movie Casey Jones was, you can
understand how important it is for the character to be done right. When
asked by Entertainment Weekly how familiar he was with the franchise,
Amell said:
"I saw all the ’90s live-action movies in the theater with buddies of mine as a kid, and after, we would go home and have a pizza party. We’d eat so much pizza that we’d barf."
I
was happy to know that Amell had seen the original movies as a kid in
the '90s. Hopefully, he didn't repeat the same mistakes of pizzas past.
3. Nostalgia
We
are getting Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, Baxter Stockman AND the Turtle
van. Seriously, 1990s me is doing backflips of delight right now. I'm
sure Krang is going to look and act more like the Nickelodeon Krang and
not sound like the smart aleck of the '90s, but it's still Krang. Also,
Bebop and Rocksteady look perfect! Stephen Farrelly (or Sheamus to us
WWE fans) and Gary Anthony Williams sound great as the respective
mutated rhino and warthog, and I think they will make a lot of us '80s
babies proud. And, again, TURTLE VAN! Well, it's a truck, but it's still
very cool.
So...
A
movie doesn't need to have a deeper meaning or some random hidden
message to be a good one. The movie can just be fun. We all love
explosions (which Michael Bay will certainly provide a lot of), we love
cheesy one-liners, and we love good fight scenes. This Ninja Turtles
movie will provide all of that and then some.
Are you going to see it? Will it stink? Will it be fun? Let me know int he comments below.
